DISTRESS AWARENESS TRAINING AGENCY

Promoting positive images and feelings towards people in distress.

I belong to a group of people who have personal experience of mental and emotional distress. We aim to counteract negative media images and the oppression by psychiatry of all people in distress.

Distress Awareness Training Agency, as we call ourselves
has been active in influencing mental health workers and commissioners of health and social services.
We also welcome any opportunities to develop awareness among other users, survivors and resisters of psychiatry.

We are based in the north west of England and have a wide network of contacts throughout the United Kingdom. It would be very encouraging to develop contacts from other parts of the world.

Madness, myths and media manipulation!
Many of the more traditional media are very difficult to access and the distorted messages conveyed within them are driven by sensationalist reporting and fiction which is, we are told, what readers, viewers and listeners want to buy.I am sceptical of such assertions. The world of webspace at least gives us easy access and an ability to freely express ourselves.

I have been searching for answers to my own distress for almost thirty years now. T'ai Chi Ch'uan has been very useful. The realisation that good friends are worth scores of fair weather friends and far more valuable than hundreds of psychiatrists came early on in my struggle. Most of the treatment I received for my madness;incarceration, ECT and medication, has been far more damaging to me than the original distress. My four children are all very wonderful and have taught me much love, fun, tolerance and patience. They are the greatest of incentives for me to stay well. I am happy for you to contact me at datraining@fcmail
